A tragic incident on Tuesday afternoon in the Kalishasan Tea Garden area of Kailashahar led to widespread unrest. According to reports, a reckless Altroz car hit a tea garden worker, triggering outrage among local residents, who allegedly beat the driver to death in retaliation.
Local sources said the car entered the tea garden at high speed and hit a worker named Logen Urang, before falling into a concrete drain. The worker sustained serious injuries, including a fractured leg. Following the crash, the three passengers inside the car abandoned the vehicle and fled into the nearby tea bushes to hide.
In response, angry villagers launched a search operation and eventually caught hold of the driver, Pradip Das (aged 35), and reportedly assaulted him severely. Shortly afterward, his lifeless body was found inside the tea garden. Pradip Das was a resident of Ratiabari in Kumarghat. The enraged mob also set fire to the damaged vehicle. Firefighters later reached the scene, extinguished the flames, and rushed the injured worker to Unakoti District Hospital.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Unakoti District Superintendent of Police Sudhamvika R., Additional Superintendent of Police V. Darlong, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Jayanta Karmakar, and Kailashahar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sukanta Sen Choudhury, along with a large force and TSR personnel, were deployed to the area to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, a short while after the incident, another youth named Nirmal Das emerged from the tea garden jungle and surrendered to the police. He told officers that three people were in the car—Pradip Das (the driver and owner), himself, and another young man named Dipan Debnath, who was seated in the back. Dipan is also a resident of Kumarghat.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident and are conducting a search operation to trace the absconding Dipan Debnath. While tension continues to prevail in the area, authorities claim that the situation is currently under control.
