On June 21st, along with the rest of the world, the 11th International Yoga Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in the Unakoti district of Tripura. The event took place in the serene and spiritually significant setting of Unakoti—an ancient Shaivite pilgrimage site of immense archaeological and religious value. The day’s observance was marked by grandeur and solemnity, with the presence of two state ministers and several top administrative officials.
Dignitaries present at the event included Tripura’s Minister for Fisheries, Sudhanshu Das; Minister for Prisons, Santana Chakma; Unakoti District Magistrate Tamal Majumdar; Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R.; Secretary of Tourism Uttam Kumar Chakma; and Director of the Higher Education Department, Animesh Debbarma. The event was jointly organized by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Department of Archaeology, Tripura AYUSH Mission, and the Unakoti District Administration.
Speaking at the event, Fisheries Minister Sudhanshu Das said,
“We are extremely delighted to come together at the sacred site of Unakoti on the occasion of International Yoga Day. I extend my heartfelt greetings to all the people of Tripura. Yoga is essential for maintaining good health and is a vital part of our ancient heritage. Under the leadership of our Prime Minister, this tradition has gained global recognition. Yoga is not only important for physical well-being but is also crucial for mental health. In today’s world, where memory and productivity are declining, the regular practice of yoga can help us stay balanced and efficient. Everyone should make yoga a part of their daily life.”
Prisons Minister Santana Chakma added,
“Yoga unites the body, mind, and soul. It is crucial to raise health awareness among today’s youth. Rather than falling into harmful habits or addictions, they should adopt yoga for both physical and mental well-being. This event has been organized with that purpose in mind. Initiatives like this play a key role in shaping healthy and responsible citizens.”
Unakoti, known for its archaeological richness, today served not just as a historic site but also as a bridge connecting ancient spiritual practices with the aspirations of a new generation. The serene natural and historical ambiance of Unakoti made the yoga sessions a unique experience for all present. As the world embraced yoga in unison, this small district in Northeast India proudly projected its spiritual and cultural heritage onto the global stage.
