A tragic incident in Sarojini Tea Garden, under Chandipur Assembly Constituency, has highlighted the turmoil of strained family relationships, financial crisis, and social decay. A young man, Malen Chasha, violently attacked his mother and another man, leaving them severely injured. This incident not only shattered a family but also raised serious questions about the degradation of societal values.
Malen Chasha’s family had been earning their livelihood by working in the tea garden for a long time. The death of his father ten years ago deepened their financial struggles, but Malen, his mother Yashoda Chasha, and his wife managed to sustain their lives together. However, their lives took a drastic turn six months ago when Yashoda developed a close relationship with a local man named Subal Bauri. Eventually, Subal started living with them, despite having no social recognition in the family. Malen and his wife, however, accepted the situation.
Initially, everything seemed normal, but over time, conflicts started escalating. Frequent quarrels between Yashoda and Subal became a concern for the neighborhood, and locals even warned Malen about the situation. Eventually, Yashoda stopped going to work at the tea garden, worsening the family’s financial condition. This growing tension ultimately led to a horrifying incident.
On the night of March 21, around 8 PM, a heated argument broke out between Yashoda and Subal, in which Malen got involved. The situation escalated to the point where, in a fit of rage, Malen attacked both of them with a wooden log, causing severe bleeding and knocking them unconscious. Locals rushed them to the hospital, while Malen voluntarily surrendered himself at the Kailashahar police station. He also admitted his actions in front of the media.
When a family collapses due to financial hardships, strained relationships, and the erosion of social norms, such violent consequences become inevitable. In labor-driven communities like tea garden workers, the lack of financial security and education often leads to the breakdown of family dependencies, resulting in instability, disputes, and ultimately violence.
Ensuring financial stability for working-class families, providing proper counseling for both men and women, and offering psychosocial support to resolve relationship conflicts are crucial steps. Additionally, strengthening family values through education and awareness is essential to prevent such incidents.
Although Malen Chasha is legally accountable for his actions, society cannot escape its responsibility. This tragedy is not just an individual’s downfall but a reflection of a deeper social crisis.
