The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) celebrated its 55th Foundation Day with due dignity. The day’s formalities began on Monday at the Kailashahar Student-Youth Building with the hoisting of the flag. The event was graced by the organization’s Vice President Sahab Uddin, Divisional Secretary Sagar Bhattacharya, State Committee Members Vishal Chakraborty, Pritam Dutta, Rupangan Baspa, and others.
Speaking to journalists, Sagar Bhattacharya said that SFI was born out of the All India Conference held in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, from December 27-30, 1970. Since its inception, the organization has worked towards achieving political independence, economic equality, and a socialist society.
He further mentioned that in Tripura’s history, SFI is not merely an organization but a symbol of a movement. During the sixties, when the state faced a food crisis, the student community led the anti-establishment movements. Students took to the streets demanding food and education, during which martyrs like Dilip, Tarun, and Arvind sacrificed their lives.
Currently, both state and national levels face a severe crisis in the education system. According to Sagar Bhattacharya, “The constitutional right to free education is under threat today. The BJP government is deliberately trying to shrink the education system, turning it into a business.”
The Foundation Day was not merely a celebration but a day for members to renew their pledge to fight. They made it clear that the struggle to protect the right to education, establish democracy, and achieve long-term socialism will continue.
In the first phase of the event, tributes were paid to martyrs. Members pledged unity and renewed their vow to fight during the flag-hoisting ceremony. Speakers emphasized, “SFI will work not only for significant goals but also to address the daily issues faced by students.”
With 55 years of legacy, the Students’ Federation of India aims to move forward in securing the right to education and preserving democratic values.
