In a significant stride towards improving the healthcare system of Tripura, the Bhagaban Nagar District Hospital in Unakoti district has set a remarkable example under the leadership and continued efforts of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha. On June 24, two complex uterine surgeries were successfully performed at the hospital—highlighting not only medical excellence but also the growing capability and sensitivity of healthcare services at the district level.
Under the Ayushman Bharat and Chief Minister Ayushman Tripura schemes, both patients—Arati Malakar (45) and Poonam Sinha (38)—received their treatment completely free of cost. Both women had been suffering from severe pain due to long-standing tumors in the uterus and ovaries. Notably, the tumor removed from Arati Devi’s uterus weighed approximately 1.5 kilograms, posing a major challenge for a district-level hospital.
The surgeries were conducted by gynecologist and obstetrician Dr. Sumit Das. The procedures were carried out under his supervision, with the active leadership of Medical Superintendent Dr. Rohan Pal, along with the cooperation of anesthetists and other healthcare professionals. The operations were completed successfully after long and complex procedures.
Family members of the patients reported that from the beginning to the end of the treatment, all medications, surgical tools, and necessary services were provided entirely free by the hospital. Not a single rupee was charged. This has greatly enhanced public trust in the state’s healthcare system.
Healthcare workers view these successful high-level gynecological surgeries at the district level as a historic development. Until now, such complex operations were mostly referred to GB Hospital in the state capital, Agartala. Now, residents of Unakoti district have access to advanced treatment right within their district.
According to hospital authorities, with continued support from schemes like Ayushman Bharat, such surgeries and services will be further strengthened in the future. This will reduce the pressure on referral hospitals and ensure that people in remote areas can access quality healthcare more easily.
This achievement undoubtedly marks the beginning of a new era in the state’s healthcare services, and the initiative taken by Bhagaban Nagar District Hospital is expected to inspire other district hospitals across Tripura.
