Kailashahar,Anupam Pal:Amid ongoing state and nationwide controversy over an embankment built by Bangladesh, Tripura’s Public Works and Flood Control Secretary Kiran Gitte visited the structure on Sunday, February 2nd, in Debipur, under Rangauti Panchayat of Kailashahar, Unakoti district.
Accompanying Secretary Kiran Gitte were BSF’s DIG from Panisagar, a commandant, the Unakoti District Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police, and the Executive Engineer of the Flood Control Department, along with other officials.
Neither Secretary Kiran Gitte nor other officials disclosed the purpose of the inspection to the media. As a result, it remains unclear whether this was a routine inspection or if it signals a diplomatic or administrative step by the government.
It is widely speculated that the visit was prompted by Tripura’s Chief Minister’s letter to Delhi regarding the recently constructed illegal embankment by Bangladesh. In the letter, concerns were raised about its potential impact on Indian territory, with fears that the embankment could cause waterlogging during monsoon.
Residents of bordering areas, particularly near Dashtaki village in Bangladesh, have expressed concerns that the embankment may obstruct water flow during the rainy season, increasing the risk of flooding in the low-lying areas of Kailashahar. This has caused growing anxiety among locals living near the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The inspection has sparked discussions in political and diplomatic circles. While the state government has yet to issue an official statement, experts believe that India and Bangladesh may soon engage in talks on water resource management along the border. The next course of action will likely depend on the findings from this visit and subsequent government decisions.
