Today, a mega camp on the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was held at Hall No. 2 of Unakoti Kalakshetra, Kailashahar, Unakoti District Headquarters. The event was organized by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL). Present at the programme were the state’s Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, MLA of the 53rd Constituency Birjit Sinha, Chairman of the Gournagar Panchayat Samiti Lakshi Namah, Vice-Chairman Badruzzaman, Chairperson of Kailashahar Municipal Council Chapla Debroy, Vice-Chairperson Nitish Dey, TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu and several others.
At the beginning of his speech, the Minister said that electricity is mainly generated from water, coal, wind, heat and other sources. In Tripura, power is produced from natural gas, but gradually the production of gas is declining, resulting in insufficient electricity generation as per demand.
He further mentioned, “The Prime Minister has launched a project called PM Surya Ghar Yojana. Under this scheme, our target is to reach 50,000 consumers by March 2027. This initiative is primarily for domestic users. The installation cost of a 1 kW solar system is around ₹65,000 to ₹75,000, with a subsidy of up to ₹33,000 available.”
He added, “The cost of a 2 kW system is about ₹1.3 lakh, with a subsidy of up to ₹66,000. A 3 kW system costs about ₹1.9 lakh to ₹2.1 lakh, with a maximum subsidy of ₹85,000. So far, around 13,536 consumers have registered under this scheme, and 266 solar panels have already been installed.”
Mr. Nath informed that at present Tripura generates electricity solely from natural gas, but as gas supply is gradually decreasing, the state government is now focusing on solar energy. He urged more citizens to come forward and take advantage of the scheme to ensure a sustainable and energy-secure future for the state.
It may be noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana on February 13, 2024. The objective of this initiative is to provide free electricity by installing rooftop solar panels in households. The central government has set a target of installing 1 crore rooftop solar systems by 2027.
