The 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) commenced at the Pragya Bhavan in Agartala, Tripura, aiming to accelerate the development and prosperity of the Northeast region. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated this crucial session. Also present were Minister of DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia, MoS Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, and chief ministers, governors, and senior officials from all eight northeastern states.
The NEC session focused on key areas, including infrastructure development, economic prosperity, optimal utilization of youth power, and environmental conservation. Special emphasis was laid on enhancing border trade and security measures. Amit Shah remarked, “The Northeast is no longer just a subject of speeches; it is now a shining example of development.”
He highlighted that the past decade has seen unprecedented infrastructural development in the Northeast. Enhanced road networks, railways, airports, and digital infrastructure have significantly reduced the distance between the region and Delhi.
The Union Home Minister pointed out that nearly 9,000 armed insurgents have returned to the mainstream in the last decade. Various peace agreements and initiatives by the central government have contributed to establishing peace in the region. Additionally, the government has taken substantial steps to position the Northeast as a global tourism destination.
Amit Shah announced a major development, stating that Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Private Limited is set to invest ₹27,000 crore in Assam. This will be the largest investment in the region, marking a significant milestone for economic growth. He further emphasized that large-scale investments are crucial for the Northeast’s economic development.
The Union Minister also underscored the importance of the Northeast’s languages, literature, and culture, describing them as an integral part of India’s heritage. “Development is not confined to infrastructure alone. Peace and prosperity must go hand in hand with the advancement of the region’s literature, language, and culture,” he said.
Amit Shah noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Northeast has progressed in a new direction over the past decade. He mentioned that the Prime Minister has visited the region 65 times, each time launching new projects for its development.
The development of the Northeast remains a top priority for the central government. The NEC session is expected to create a comprehensive roadmap for the region’s development, peace, and prosperity. By improving infrastructure, attracting investments, and preserving cultural heritage, the central government is determined to integrate the Northeast into the nation’s developmental mainstream.
