A huge amount of cash recovery has triggered widespread sensation in Kailashahar of Unakoti district. Around 11 p.m. on Thursday night, police seized ₹20,63,100 in cash during a special search operation at the Chinibagan naka point.
Sources said a black Maruti Suzuki S-Presso car (registration number TR-05-E-0654) heading from Kailashahar towards Dharmanagar was stopped and searched by police and TSR personnel. The raid was carried out based on specific intelligence input. During the search, bundles of cash were found hidden inside bags and different compartments of the vehicle.
Two young men were detained on the spot. The arrested are identified as Sourav Sinha (22), son of Sukhmani Sinha, resident of Damsachhara Narendra Nagar Ward No. 2, and Arpan Nandi (32), son of Ganesh Nandi, resident of Damcharra.
However, where exactly the huge sum of money was being taken from Kailashahar via Dharmanagar remains unclear. Officer-in-Charge of Kailashahar Police Station, Tapas Malakar, stated— “We received a tip-off that a vehicle was transporting a large sum of cash. Based on this, a naka checking was conducted at Chinibagan point. The car was intercepted, searched, and ₹20,63,100 was recovered. Interrogation of the accused is ongoing, and legal proceedings are being initiated.”
The seized money was counted with an electronic machine in the presence of DCM Rajib Dutta, and kept in police custody. At present, both the accused and the money are under Kailashahar Police Station’s custody.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Unakoti District D. Darlong, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Jayanta Karmakar, along with other senior officers were present at the spot. The incident has caused a huge stir across the subdivision.
