Based on a tip-off, the Irani Police conducted a major operation this evening and seized a large quantity of illegal Burmese cigarettes. The cigarettes were recovered from the dense jungles of Rangauti, located near the international border in the subdivision headquarters of Kailashahar in Unakoti district. The operation was led by DSP Utpalendu Debnath, accompanied by officers of the Irani Police and other security personnel.
Speaking to the press, DSP Utpalendu Debnath stated, “We received information from a reliable source that a significant quantity of Burmese cigarettes was stockpiled in the jungle near the border area of Rangaouti. Acting on that information, we launched an operation today and managed to recover 178,200 pieces of Burmese cigarettes from the dense forest. The estimated market value of the seized cigarettes is around 8 lakh rupees. We are working to identify those involved in this incident and will soon take legal action against them. It is suspected that the cigarettes were illegally brought in from Bangladesh and were being stored in the jungle for further smuggling.”
He further added that strict surveillance is being maintained in the border areas to prevent illegal smuggling activities and that such acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
