Kailashahar,Anupam Pal: The NCC Police Station has taken strict action against drug trafficking in Tripura’s capital, Agartala. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a house in the Khejur Bagan area on Wednesday and recovered narcotics worth over ₹2 lakh. The seizure included dry cannabis, 300 vials of heroin, ₹19,000 in cash, and a mobile phone.
The police arrested the house owner, Loknath Roy, during the operation. Based on his confession, another person, Dipankar Roy, was also detained. Both individuals will be produced in court on Thursday, and the police will seek their custody, said NCC Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sushanta Deb.
According to the police, the market value of the recovered narcotics is approximately ₹2 lakh. O.C. Sushanta Deb stated that they received confidential information about a large stock of drugs being stored at Loknath Roy’s residence in Khejur Bagan. Acting promptly, the police conducted a raid and successfully recovered the items.
Despite this success, local residents have expressed long-standing grievances about the increasing presence of drug dealers in the Khejur Bagan area. They allege that drug trafficking, gambling, and theft have been on the rise, turning the locality into a hub of criminal activities. The lack of regular police monitoring, they believe, has emboldened the offenders.
While residents appreciated the NCC Police Station’s recent actions, they demanded more active involvement from the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and the Superintendent of Police (SP) to curb these illegal activities.
The Tripura government’s campaign for a “Drug-Free Tripura” continues to face significant challenges. Opposition parties argue that the government’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs has not been effectively implemented, leaving gaps that allow drug trafficking to thrive. Reports suggest that the sale and consumption of narcotics, including digital drugs, are widespread in the alleys of the capital city.
Though the recent operation is a noteworthy achievement for law enforcement, the masterminds behind the drug networks remain at large. This highlights the need for more comprehensive and sustained anti-drug measures to address the root of the issue.
The government and police administration must adopt more proactive and strategic measures to eliminate drug-related activities in the state. Without consistent efforts, isolated successes may not be enough to tackle the growing threat of narcotics and safeguard the future of Tripura’s youth.
