Unakoti District Hospital has set an extraordinary example by saving the life of Dipali Biswas, a resident of the Manu area in Dhalai district. About one and a half years ago, her leg was fractured in an accident. Due to lack of proper treatment, the condition later deteriorated, and the leg developed gangrene, turning her situation increasingly critical.
Gangrene is a fatal disease in which cells of a body part die due to lack of blood supply. It usually occurs from injury, infection, or chronic circulatory problems. Symptoms include discoloration of the skin, numbness, severe pain, and tissue decay.According to reports, despite seeking treatment at various hospitals, her condition did not improve. Finally, she was admitted to Kailashahar District Hospital. By then, Dipali’s condition had become so serious that her life was at risk.It was learned that her hemoglobin level had dropped below five. Realizing the urgency, orthopedic specialist Dr. Nirmal Debbarma of the district hospital took charge of the case. Taking a highly risky decision, he proceeded with an operation to amputate the lower part of her left leg. Before the surgery, the patient was given three units of blood. The operation was successfully conducted by Dr. Debbarma with the assistance of anesthesiologist Dr. Rupamoy Das, OT nurse Kaberi Saha, OT assistants Mithun Mall and Subhash Debbarma, along with other healthcare workers. As a result, Dipali Biswas, who was on the verge of death, was given a new lease of life.
The news of this successful surgery has spread across Unakoti, with people from all sections of society showering praise on Dr. Nirmal Debbarma and his team. This case has proven that even with limited infrastructure, complex operations can be carried out with dedication, confidence, and a strong sense of duty—setting a remarkable precedent at Unakoti District Hospital.
