A crucial meeting was recently held in Delhi regarding the preservation and development of one of Tripura’s most glorious historical and spiritual pilgrimage sites—Shaiva Tirtha Unakoti. In New Delhi, the state’s Minister of Social Education and Social Welfare, Tinku Roy, held a prolonged meeting with Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
The meeting involved extensive discussions on the overall development and tourism potential of Unakoti. Particular emphasis was laid on boundary demarcation of the sacred site, restoration of the water flow of Sita Kunda, renovation of the dilapidated Natmandir, construction of market stalls for local livelihood support, development of tourism infrastructure, provision of parking facilities, renovation of approach roads, road widening, drinking water facilities, modern toilets, and installation of street lights.
The Union Minister listened attentively to each proposal and assured full cooperation from the central government. Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Tinku Roy wrote: “Unakoti is not just an archaeological site, it is the symbol of Tripura’s culture, spirituality, and heritage. Its preservation is our responsibility.”
It is noteworthy that Unakoti, with its rock-cut sculptures, mystical environment, and historical significance, has long been a focal point of attraction for tourists from across the country and abroad. However, over the years, loss of biodiversity, the drying up of the Sita Kunda water source, forest encroachment, and lack of adequate infrastructure have posed a grave threat to this heritage site.
With this initiative by the state’s Social Welfare Minister, locals are hopeful that through the joint efforts of the central and state governments, Unakoti will once again regain its former glory.
