July 15, 2025, will be remembered as a golden chapter in the administrative history of Unakoti district in Tripura. On this day, District Magistrate Dr. Tamal Majumder (IAS) launched a unique and humane initiative named ‘Sampark’, carrying the heartfelt slogan— “Gaon Ko Apnao, Badlav Lao” (Embrace the village, bring change).
Under this initiative, officials from various government departments have adopted all 92 Gram Panchayats and ADC villages of the district. The core objective is to go beyond official duties and actively engage with the adopted villages to address day-to-day issues faced by the people, thereby fostering a direct and compassionate connection with the community.
Setting an exemplary standard himself, Dr. Tamal Majumder adopted the Gournagar Gram Panchayat. Just yesterday, he visited an Anganwadi Centre (AWC) in the area, where he found a mentally unstable person lying on the veranda floor for an extended period. The sight was frightening the children and had significantly reduced their attendance at the center.
Upon inquiry, locals informed Dr. Majumder that the individual was Sushanta Sinha, a resident of Kirtantali village under the Gournagar RD Block, and that he had been mentally unwell for a long time. Without delay, the District Magistrate informed the Chief Medical Officer of the district.
Responding swiftly, the District Malaria Officer (DMO), Dr. Shankha Shubhra Debnath, took initiative and, after obtaining the consent of Sushanta’s mother, Bijuli Sinha, began arrangements to transfer him to a mental health facility in Agartala. With the coordinated efforts of the local administration, health department, and police, Sushanta Sinha was safely shifted this morning by ambulance to the Mental Hospital in Ushabazar, Narsingarh, Agartala, for appropriate treatment.
Speaking about the incident, Dr. Tamal Majumder stated,”We want to ensure that no one is left isolated or neglected in society. We wish him a speedy recovery and will stand by him administratively.”
Dr. Majumder’s humane intervention did not just secure treatment for a mentally ill individual, it also highlighted how empathetic governance can bring about real societal change.
The initiative has received widespread praise across social media. Many have commented, “If all levels of administration act with such compassion, many societal problems will resolve on their own.”
This effort by the Unakoti administration has garnered appreciation from civil society, educators, and the general public alike—proving that ‘Sampark’ is not merely a program, but a living bridge between governance and humanity.
