Kailashahar,Anupam Pal:A joint operation conducted by Kailashahar Police and the BSF late last night in the Kubzhar area of Kailashahar, Unakoti district, led to the seizure of a Tata 407 vehicle (Registration No. TR-01-AL-1619) carrying a massive quantity of illegal bidis. A total of 120 bundles of bidis were recovered from the vehicle, with an estimated market value exceeding ₹40 lakh.
Sources indicate that the consignment was intended for smuggling into Bangladesh. However, no concrete evidence has been found yet. The vehicle was intercepted while traveling from Kailashahar towards Baburbazar, raising suspicion during routine checks.
The driver, Bikram Debnath, along with his associates Bipul Debnath and Rahul Kumar, were arrested on the spot. Kailashahar Police Officer-in-Charge Mika Darlong confirmed that the accused could not produce any valid documents for the seized consignment. The operation was led by Kailashahar Police Inspector Pankaj Barman and BSF Inspector Ravi Kamal.
Bikram Debnath and Bipul Debnath are residents of Gournagar in Unakoti district, while Rahul Kumar hails from Jahangirpur in Bihar. So far, the reason for transporting such a large quantity of bidis to the northern region of the city remains unclear.
The police have stated that the accused are currently under interrogation and will be presented in court today. Further investigations are underway to gather more details about the case.
This joint operation by the police and BSF has been widely appreciated by the local residents, who view it as a significant success in curbing illegal activities in the region.
